Representing the Kingdom through Fashion

Written by Nathalie

Born and raised in Africa and in a Christian home, my parents always used to tell us, “The minute you step out of the house, remember that you are representing your parents, your family and most importantly who you are”. Up to this day, every time that I put on clothes or buy a garment, I can still hear their voices. Your appearance and the way you dress reveal your values and a character.

With today’s society, the pressure of social media and the pressure of looking perfect, many thinks that showing skin and certain part of your body is sexy while modest Fashion is boring and not attractive. LIES! I’m one that truly believe and know that modest fashion is not boring. You can look sexy, elegant, beautiful, classy and STYLISH while looking modest.

Here are some reflections about what the Bible says about a Christian’s appearance.

Your Body is a temple

1 Corinthians 6:19 NLT “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself”

I know this sounds more as healthy scripture, that we need to take care of our bodies through healthy eating, exercising, resting etc… but also by the way we present your bodies, by the way we clothe our bodies. Remember that you are representing God’s Kingdom, so therefore your outside appearance needs to reflect who you are representing.

You are the light of the world

Matthew 5:14-16 NLT “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.  No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

When people observe your appearance, is it an impression of holiness? Does portray an image of the love for the world, does the way you dressed can cause someone to stumble? These are questions that we need to ask ourselves when we put on clothes every day. We are the light of the world. We are supposed to shine, be the example for the world, reflect the light of God through the way we dress and not darkness.

Your appearance reveals your heart

1 Timothy 2:9-10 NLT “And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes.  For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do.

The way you view yourself on the inside will reflect how you present yourself to the world. Clothing is an expression of our inner beauty and character. What we wear says a lot about the condition of our hearts, our character, and values.  At the end of the day, God is more interested in your inner beauty, that’s why we should not base our inner beauty through the outer one, but your inner beauty should the reflection of your outside appearance. There are many examples in the Bible about Modest Fashion but remember that dressing modestly doesn’t mean you lack confidence, it means that you are so confident that you don’t need to reveal our body the world but rather your heart and your mind. Looking well dressed shows that you respect yourself, you respect people around you and that you respect the Kingdom of God. I know that these days it’s a bit hard with what society is flaunting in front of our eyes, but you if your heart is based on the love of Christ, nothing will shake you. Again, remember who and what you represent. You are a representative of the Kingdom of God, you are an Ambassador of Jesus Christ, so always present and clothe yourself with strength, dignity and respect. The world is watching, make sure you reflect the image of God.
